Head of Daytime Programming

I was the Head of Daytime Programming at URN, one of the top student radio stations in the country, from August 2019-August 2020. I was in charge of a team of 50 and worked within a management team of 13 to maintain professional standards across a station of around 200 people.

The main responsibilities of my role included:

  • Auditioning applicants to ensure the best talent was being broadcast
  • Maintaining a consistently high quality of output
  • Scheduling shows to fit around busy student schedules
  • Making sure missed shows were covered
  • Organising team building
  • Overseeing and being heavily involved in the planning, enactment and postproduction of 7 special, whole team shows across the year (Moving in, Christmas, valentines etc.)

One of my proudest achievements from this role was broadcasting a Christmas special from a student household as an OB and also maintaining regular Daytime programming from home during the first national lockdown which included the broadcast of two whole department specials. We achieved this by having members send in pre-recorded audio that I edited into packages so everyone’s voice could be heard.

The Specials received a nomination from the Student Radio Awards for our use of multiple platforms during the broadcasts, for example Twitch, Instagram stories and Twitter.

I did this job on top of finishing my joint-honours degree in English and History and presenting / producing two of my own weekly shows alone.

One challenge of the role was that our studio was in the middle of being rebuilt so maintaining good audio quality and overcoming technical challenges was a regular battle that I faced and like to think that I won.
