World Wildlife Day

This week we celebrated World Wildlife Day, in my opinion a very important day where we recognise the significance of the natural world. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the 3rd March – ‘the day of signature of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora in 1973 – as UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants.’ Each year the importance of recognising the place of nature in our world grows more pressing as we edge closer and closer to destroying it beyond repair.

Without preaching though, I would encourage everyone to get outside and to spend an hour taking notice of the flora and fauna on your doorstep. It can be fun noticing the flowers poking their heads through at this time of year and seeing which animals are starting to get ready for the warmth to come. I have attached a video below where you can see me and my mum enjoying the fresh air and lovingly bickering about the things we see around us. As individuals it is hard to feel like anything you do matters but stopping and taking a deep breath in nature can really have a huge impact on your own mental health and your drive to make change, no matter how small. This winter my mum and I used our warm hands to defrost some daffodils that had bloomed early, in order to save them ready for the bees this spring. Change doesn’t come about though with 5% of people living perfectly sustainable lives (and I for sure cannot say that I do) but it does with 90% caring enough to do a little bit.  The drive to make small changes comes from a love of nature and so this is why I encourage you all to get out and see what is out there to be seen.

This is a topic very close to my heart as both sustainability and animal welfare is at the centre of many of my decisions. Many people I think see climate change and animal welfare as far off things that don’t really affect their small pocket of the world but unfortunately that is wrong. I encourage you all to read up on World Wildlife day here: https://www.wildlifeday.org

I support two charities who can enact change on a much larger scale: WWF and The World Animal Protection and each month I receive details of their work and how they are having an impact and it inspires me to do better in my day to day.

Here is some fun information on the penguins of Terre Adelie:

I am currently walking 100 miles in March for WWF and if anyone has a spare £1 (1p per mile) the link to my fundraiser is here https://www.facebook.com/donate/177079353881076/
