12 Years to Save the Planet – Podcast

12 Years was a speech-based show / podcast that I started in my final year at URN. It focused on approaches to change, looking mainly within Nottingham and the University itself. Each week focused on a different issue in order to discuss the topic very widely. I won a Student Achievement award for this podcast, as the University recognised how I brought a very important topic into an area of student life where it didn’t previously exist, and how I made the issue accessible for students through the medium of radio.

I interviewed many very relevant people from within the university, such as the SU Officer for Sustainability, the head of Sustainability Society and the employees in the new Zero Waste shop, as well as everyday students to show different attitudes.

Outside of the University I visited people who were doing their bit within Nottingham city, for example, I interviewed Nottingham City Transport about their Biofuel buses, for our transport episode.

When Corona Virus sent us home, I was unable to broadcast a weekly show as I had no one to discuss the issue with, but I wasn’t content with that being the end. I contacted all of the people who had been on the show before and asked them to answer some questions for me and record their answers. I then reached out to the University and spoke with the Dean of the Medical Faculty who was also heavily involved in the sustainability of the University. With all of my research complete I complied the recordings to create the 12 Years Corona Virus Special; An Unprecedented Environmental Opportunity.

Best Journalistic:

I entered this podcast for Best Journalistic Programming at the Student Radio Awards and here is what some of the top industry members had to day about my entry.

“Strong topic, good show title and presentation”

“This is a really well-produced programme exploring in depth an issue which is at the forefront of everyone’s minds at the moment.”

“The use of beds, vox pops and sound effects made it a really engaging listen and we heard from a good variety of different voices. The Extinction Rebellion debate was well facilitated, with two passionate speakers exploring the issue.”

“I really liked that you got out of the studio to talk to those in Nottingham working on sustainability. Simply hearing background noise in the bus depot brought the programme to life a bit”

“An impressive programme which used a variety of treatments to explore climate change in a student focused way.”

“A really important and interesting entry. I was pleased to hear the differing opinions and debate section as it demonstrated the show gave a platform to more than one point of view. The approach to covering the coronavirus pandemic on the environment with your student special is a really creative approach. Well done.”
